The Shipton Cave in Yorkshire is only one such mountain cave in the English countryside which surrounds Yorkshire Dales, Knaresborough, Shipton and other centres of human habitation.
These caves in England are highly treasured by historians, archeologists, and other scientific people. Within the deeps of these caves lies treasures and stories of human interest. For example, the Thaw Head Cave of Ingleton, North Yorkshire has provided evidence of neolithic or new stone age habitation. The quarry sites that surround these caves are full of this type of evidence.
Mother Shipton's Cave is situated in Knaresborough on the side of the River Nidd.
This cave is described as a tufa cave and classified as a Karst cave.

What does that mean ?
An article on caves.org states that Karstic caves are a result of the karstification process. This process promotes karstic carbonate formations where carbonate rocks become karstic aquifers through a dissolution process. Tufa meanwhile, is a product of karstification.
tufa.bc.ca states that " tufa is formed when water evaporates from lime rich waters, leaving calcite to crystallize....
Tufa rock can be brittle and tend to break apart and in time quarries grow. Even in the neolithic age these quarries would have made nice rock beds where earth could be mixed in to a point where good gardening ground would be available.
But only the devil knows the details of that....and a few scientists perhaps. Knowledge is the Faustian paradox afterall and most people know of the story where Fault sold is soul to the devil for knowledge.
