The origin of the name Shipton
It is likely that the Shipton name starts with the Norman invasions of 1066 AD.
According to one source the name is derived from scip and tun where scip is to sheep what tun is to settlement. These are old English terms.
Several variations of this name were used in a society were spelling rules were loosely used. One record might have written it Shipton, or Shippton, Shiptone, or Skipton, as in Skipton Castle in North Yorkshire that was built by Robert de Romille in c. 1090 and used until 1645.
With the Norman conquest of 1066 the scip tun came to occupy areas around Oxfordshire where some scip tun rose in courtly prominence and were made Lords of the manor of Shipton-on-Cherwell.
Shipton-on-Cherwell and Thrupp is situated in the Oxfordshire county in England on the River Cherwell. A parish church had been erected by the 12th century and it was dedicated to the holy cross. In later years it made it's dedications to Saint Mary (1786) and by 1851 the dedications were made to Saint Jerome. Sometime around 1600 a manor house was added.
Interesting note
Richard Branson who owns Virgin Records bought the manor house in 1969 or 1970 and started a recording studio called The Manor House. This studio recorded bands such as Black Sabbath and others.
The manor was sold in the late 1990's to a [Baron Kenlis ??? ] who is of the lineage of the Marquess of Headforth. The Marquis of Headforth as he likes to be called is nicknamed Christo.
What else is playing at the Manor ?
The Exorcist theme is a product of Tubular. If nothing else the Mother Shipton theme inspires creative arts....
The Oxford canal passes through Shipton-on-Cherwell.
However interesting these tidbits of information are they do not hold much information on Ursula Shipton or the Yorkshire sibyl.
Oxfordshire is nowhere near Yorkshire. Oxfordshire is much closer to the area of the Stonehenges and it might fit in well with the Merlin and King Arthur story of prophecy and magick especially when one considers that the Marquess of Headforth is a descendant of an Ireland bloodline.
However Mother Ursula Sontheil or Shipton is said to have been born in a cave in Knaresborougn along the river Nidd in the year 1480 something. This is close to Yorkshire. The best ancient artifacts situated in this geographical area that could add to this "devil's children" story are the Devil's Arrows. These are found in North Yorkshire only a stones throw away from Shipton and Knaresborough. Could these be megalithic portals to a different dimension of being ?
Perhaps another artifact and another region called Skipton or Skipton-in-Craven could shed some more light on this mystery. The Skipton Castle is located in the county of North Yorkshire in the town of Skipton and in the district of Craven.
Skipton is mentioned in the Domesday book which was a great survey of England compiled in 1085 by William I. Ironically the Skipton castle was by some accounts started on in 1085 by Robert de Romille who came from Normandy with William I in 1066.
Yes, there is a Shipton on the map in this area also.
Again interesting since to get to Yorkshire and Shipton and Skipton one must cross Nottingham and everyone who has heard of the legend of King Arthur and Merlin and the Knights of the Round Table and even Robin Hood knows that Nottingham is a place with many esoteric secrets.
Here be giants, bogeymen, trolls, pixies, dwarves, goblins, elfs, and other imps to contend with....so the story goes.
So the Shipton name is found in both North Yorkshire and in Oxfordshire.
What about the Yorkshire Shipton ?
What about Toby Shipton ?
What about the name Sontheil, or Sonthill, or Southill ???
More to come.....
Recall that this information is only a study and not a professional etymological dictate.
All this exercise is meant to do is to find out more on the prophetess of Yorkshire known as Mother Ursula and the Shipton name.
