William Beebe - Dr Will

William BeebeIn the 1930's Dr. William Beebe was working with Otis Barton on the Bathysphere which would submerse to depths of 3028 ft and would hold that record for several years.

William Beebe was born in 1877 (July 29, 1877 - June 4, 1962).
He was a naturalist and a curious explorer.  He was also a man able to nurture influential friends and could be seen socializing with names like Rudyard Kipling, Theodore Roosevelt, and even Prince George of England.

At the age of 22 Dr Will had been named Curator of Ornithology for the New York Zoological Society. By 1919 he was also the acting Director of the Department of Tropical Research. Dr Beebe wrote books and articles on nature while his wife Helen Elswyth Ricker, 23 years his junior ( pen name - Elswyth Thane) wrote romance novels. His other wife was Jocelyn Crane and some sources claim that Dr. Will was quite the womenizer.

In later life Beebe funded a chapter of the New York Zoological Society in Arima Valley off of Trinidad and Tobago. This was called the Simla and the 92 hectares of jungle land were donated to the Societies Trust upon his death.
