Burckhalter co-invented a fluorescent dye along with Robert J. Seiwald. The dye could be used by medical practitioners in diagnostics. It was initially used to detect Malaria and Tuberculosis and other infectious diseases.

 

Joseph H. Burckhalter was inducted into the Invention Hall of Fame in 1995.
